Redefining Talent in the AI Era

Session Description

What does "talent" mean when AI can produce polished output in seconds and the half-life of any given skill keeps shrinking? This session moves past the usual extremes - AI changes everything versus AI changes nothing - to rethink how we define talent on both sides of the equation: who we hire from the outside, and who we bet on, promote, and redeploy from within.

For external talent, that means shifting from screening proxies like pedigree, polished work product, & fluency, toward durable capabilities like learning velocity and judgment. For internal talent, it means watching for new signals: discernment about when to use AI, the quality of someone's questions, the instinct to verify rather than defer, and the leverage they create for others.

Underlying both is a single shift: AI commoditizes production and makes judgment, discernment, and leverage the scarce goods.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Apply a common lens to both external and internal talent and use it to distinguish durable capabilities from the proxies that AI can now cheaply replicate.
• Identify the specific signals that matter when assessing internal talent in the age of AI using the behavioral data they already have.
• Confront the structural risk AI poses to talent development and articulate the implications for their hiring, promotion, and pipeline decisions.
